The event will showcase a panel of private sector senior executives–who also serve as Board members of Boston-area non-profit organizations. These executives will discuss their experiences as board members. The event will provide prospective Fellows and Organizations with a great opportunity to learn more about the program, hear what it’s like to serve on a board, and to network with current, former, and future Board Fellows!

Speakers include:

Sarah Appleby

Sarah is a freelance consultant providing strategic planning, operations streamlining, and market analysis services to organizations with a social mission. She holds an MBA in Nonprofit Management from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University and a BA in Education from Hampshire College. She has worked as a Project Manager at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and a Program Coordinator for the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center and the Jewish Multiracial Network. A long-time resident of the Boston area, Sarah has a particular love of urban green spaces and community gardens, having worked on several farms in New England over the years.

Marla Capozzi

Marla is a senior innovation expert in McKinsey’s Boston office. She has been with McKinsey for 11 years.  She has served a range of global clients in financial services, media, consumer and social sectors with a focus on developing breakthrough innovation strategies as well as mobilizing for innovation. Her expertise also includes knowledge and talent management, and product development. Prior to joining McKinsey, Marla led product development at the Lotus-IBM Innovation Centre where the group launched the industry’s first collaboration, learning, knowledge management and commerce software solutions.  Marla has published leading articles in the McKinsey Quarterly, Sloan Management Review, Strategic Finance and Banking Strategies.  She is on the Board of Trustees of Babson College and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for Project Bread, a local hunger organization.

Board Fellows Application Opening on August 22nd!

The Board Fellows program will begin accepting applications for its Fall 2011 placement on Monday, August 22. Those who are interested in participating should plan to attend our panel event the week of September 12 (specific date and location TBD). A panel of private sector senior executives–who also serve as Board members of Boston-area non-profit organizations–will discuss their experiences as board members. The event will provide prospective Fellows and Organizations with a great opportunity to learn more about the program, hear what it’s like to serve on a board, and to network with current, former, and future Board Fellows!

Daron: I founded the Net Impact Undergrad chapter at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008. When I graduated and moved to Boston in 2010, I joined Net Impact Board Fellows to get more involved and give back to the city I already loved!

Net Impact Boston: What’s your current job?

Daron: Upon graduation I received an AmeriCorps Residency In Social Enterprise with the New Sector Alliance, during which I worked at Initiative for a Competitive Inner City.  Later this month, I will be starting a job with FSG Social Impact Advisors, as a Research Associate.

Net Impact Boston: What organization have you been placed with and what will you be doing for them?

Daron: I serve on the board of the East Boston Ecumenical Community Council (EBECC), designing and implementing a social media strategy to engage the Latino/a clientele of the organization.

Net Impact Boston: What three things are on your “bucket list”?

Daron: Three of my craziest “bucket list” items are to own my own pottery studio, climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, and be a part of, or found, a secret society

We’re working with local, values-aligned companies to set up projects on which you’ll consult directly for the organization that needs your help. The time commitment is 5-10 hours per week over a 3-, 6-, or 9-month term, depending on the organization’s needs and your availability. Those of you who are currently employed can do the project during professional-friendly hours, such as meeting on-site over lunch and working off-site on your own schedule. Your compensation is the contacts you’ll make and the great experience on your resume.

From helping a charter school in Boston launch a marketing program, to assisting an organization dedicated to educating girls in third world countries develop its strategic plan, Net Impact Boston Board Fellows have been making a real impact.

Non-Profit Organizations – Does your organization need additional board support? Would you like a fresh prospective and additional input? Organization 1: Small non-profit that uses music to educate and empower youth

· Mission: Start-up stage: To fortify urban youth by helping them gain musical proficiency, cultural literacy and personal resilience through African Diasporic music and mentoring.

· Project/Challenge:

o Strategic Planning – Performance & Outcome Measurement and Program Evaluation Create program evaluation guide/tools to help set benchmarks for and measure the performance of the organization and its programs.

Organization 2: Mid-size non-profit that provides continuing education and training to equal justice attorneys

· Mission: Start-up stage; To provide equal justice advocates, through high quality, accessible continuing education and training, with the tools they need to obtain justice for their clients

o Create a business plan to help develop a diverse and reliable revenue stream.  Establish pricing models for course delivery and licensing and other resources to expand organizational reach; develop a marketing plan and outreach strategy; assist in developing a strategic plan for managing growth.

Organization 3: Mid-size, growth stage non-profit that trains at-risk girls in verbal and physical safety skills and self-awareness

· Mission: To empower girls and young women to value and champion their own safety and well being

o Evaluate feasibility of program expansion.  Perform market analysis of costs, need, marketability, desirability and identification of similar programs.

· Preferred Experience:

o Business plan development

o Program growth/expansion

Organization 4: Small start-up stage non-profit that is building one school at a time in developing countries to make the classroom more accessible to girls

· Mission: To equip girls with self-reliance, knowledge, and increased capacities to both enhance their own lives and to contribute productively to their societies

· Project/Challenges:

o Board development; business planning and strategic growth; marketing

o Develop rules and procedures for Board of Directors – establish board constitution, procedures and guidelines.

o Establish plan for organizational growth and sustainability; create funding plan; finance management.

Organization 6: Start-up phase non-profit that encourages individuals to support philanthropic causes

· Mission: To inspire and support people to give at their full lifetime potential

o Exploring different business models (in the aim to increase earned income) and Partnership models (which structures and other orgs yield most benefit to the non-profit)

o Leadership transition

o Helping org focus its programs: Identifying the most impactful, financially sustainable programs aligned with mission

o Familiarity with non-profits and for-profit organizations

Organization 7: Growth phase non-profit that provides affordable home ownership opportunities to needy families

· Mission: To strengthen families and communities through affordable home ownership opportunities.

· Project/Challenge:

o Develop new program for local community designed to engage youth in the mission of the organization.

o Program should include events, fundraising, and volunteer opportunities for participants.

· Preferred Experience:

o Strategic planning

o Experience geared towards exciting youth in compelling manners

o Marketing strategy

Organization 8: Growth phase non-profit that provides mental health consumers/survivors/ex patients with resources to lead rewarding and meaningful lives.

· Mission: To carry message of recovery, empowerment, hope and healing to people who have been labeled with mental illness.

· Project/Challenge:

o Explore the possibility of establishing a for-profit business that supports the non-profit. Explore grant/seed funding sources for start-up and viable directions for the business

o Develop strategic plan for spinning out an organization that is fiscally sponsored by the non-profit.

o Fundraising strategy to better-diversify income sources and better track and interact with donors.

· Preferred Experience:

o Strategic planning as it relates to business planning and/or fundraising

o Customer relationship management or Donor management
