Show Us Your Impact: Apply for The Force for Change Award

It’s time to applaud Net Impact members for their success! Formerly known as the Net Impact Challenge, The Force for Change Award recognizes Net Impact members who have engaged in environmental or social impact projects in the last year. Our award is specifically focused on the folks behind grassroots efforts-undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals who lead projects from the ground up. A panel of judges will choose winners in each category based on the tangible, measurable impact of applicants’ projects, as well as the qualitative impact, creativity, and long-term potential.

Download the application here. The deadline is June 11.

May 11: The Green Economy Conference

The Green Economy Conference offers a progressive and engaging dialogue. The goal is to transform and stimulate the local green economy by bringing together leading thinkers and doers from diverse sectors, disciplines and perspectives to promote multiculturalism, sustainability, corporate responsibility and green jobs in New England. Attend progressive workshops and engage in unique networking opportunities with green leaders of today and tomorrow.

Join the GEC on Tuesday, May 11th and receive valuable exposure among key cross-industry decision makers to foster sustainable green economy relationships, partnerships and new business opportunities in New England. The GEC equips companies to increase bottom-line benefits.

On May 24 and 25, 2010, the second annual research conference on Conscious Capitalism will be held on the campus of Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, on the outskirts of Boston. Building on the 2009 academic conference titled “Conceptualizing Conscious Capitalism,” this year’s gathering will further the understanding of what is known, review current teachings and further discover and uncover the complex and fascinating approach to business. A stellar group of practitioners and thought leaders has been assembled to inspire and challenge participants to think differently about business. Attendees will include a blend of executives, entrepreneurs, academics and doctoral students. The format is designed to be highly interactive and participatory.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Sustainability Studies is offering a free, non-credit online professional graduate certificate in Sustainable Management through a Department of Labor workforce development grant. Enrollment for the educational program is anticipated to begin June 2010.

May 2010 President’s Corner

The lovely weather this month has served to remind me that Spring in Boston is finally in full swing. There are blossoms on the trees, some of which smell amazing, and tulips popping out of the ground. I’ve finally put away the heavy coat and snow boots and traded them in for a revitalized sense of adventure. The month of April saw a few firsts for me, some of which I plan to do again – such as attend the Boston Independent Film Festival and roast a good friend for his birthday. Others, however, I do not plan on repeating – many people find escargot and oysters delicious. I am not one of those people.

The end of April and first few weeks of May also mark two firsts for Net Impact Boston. NIB is one of the organizations involved in the April 29th Networking the Networks event along with MassINC, The New Prosperity Initiative and YNPN. The idea behind this social is to introduce our community to other civic-minded organizations, and their members, within the Boston area. With well over 200 RSVPs, this has shaped up to be our largest event for 2010 thus far. Secondly, Saturday May 22nd will mark our first friends and family event – an outing to George’s Island. This social – which will consist of a BBQ as well as some other fun activities – will give NIB members a chance to kick back, relax and enjoy the great outdoors together. Net Impact Boston is working hard to strengthen ties not only within our community, but also between NIB and other like-minded professional organizations in the Boston area. If you haven’t made it out to a Net Impact event yet in 2010, I hope one of these will be your first.

May 22: Net Impact BBQ on George’s Island

Join fellow Net Impacters, families and friends on an exciting getaway and afternoon full of fun. Explore George’s Island, part of the Boston Harbor Islands, a stone’s throw from the Boston Harbor. Join us for a nature hike, explore the island’s fort, play games, or just kick back and socialize – there’s an option for everyone. Truly one of the best kept secrets in Boston. Get there by public transportation, but feel a world away!

Details
The Net Impact group will be assembling at the Boston Harbor Islands ferry ticket kiosk on Long Wharf (adjacent to the Marriott hotel & Christopher Columbus Park) at 10:30am. The ferry leaves promptly at 11am – don’t arrive late or you’ll have to wait for the next boat! You will be responsible for purchasing ferry tickets for each member of your group ($14 roundtrip for adults; $8 for kids aged 3-11). The ferry ride to George’s Island is 20 minutes in length; ferries depart the Island back to Boston every hour on the half hour, with the last ferry departing back to Boston at 4:30pm.

Getting There
If choosing public transportation, the closest T stops to Long Wharf are the Aquarium stop on the Blue line (very close), State Street on the Orange line (5-6 blocks), or Government Center on the Green line (6-7 blocks). For those that are driving, you can park at the Post Office Square Parking Garage for a flat rate of $9 for the entire day.

What to Bring
Sunscreen, water, folding chair, comfortable shoes, games and sporting equipment, comfortable shoes, jacket or fleece if it gets cool, etc.

RSVP Information
To let us know that you are attending and get a free lunch ticket, be sure to RSVP to Greg Andeck (greg@netimpactboston.org) with the names and number of people in your party by May 14th. Please also indicate your preference for hot dogs, hamburgers, or vegetarian options. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided (sorry, no booze allowed).

Got other questions? Check out the Boston Harbor Island’s FAQs or email Greg at greg@netimpactboston.org. We’ll see you on George’s Island!
